Orthodontic Emergencies

We see our patients every 4-8 weeks which is a BIG commitment in our busy lifestyles. When an emergency arises, we want you to be prepared at home with a few easy fixes to prevent you from making another trip to see the Orthodontist.
Broken Bracket

Make sure the bracket is dry of saliva and place an OrthoDot (can get from Amazon) over the bracket to prevent it from sliding around and irritating the cheek.

Long Wire

Long wires can be caused for a few reasons and depending on the cause we have different solutions for you.

  1. If the wire slides around the arch and is short on one side and long on the other side, use the eraser side of a pencil to push the wire back around the arch.
  2. If the last molar bracket broke and fell off the wire, get a new pair of nail clippers or boil (to sterilize) an old pair and clip the wire.
  3. If a wire is poking you that is tying the wire into the bracket; again, use the eraser end of a pencil and tuck the wire under the archwire.
  4. If you have a power chain and significant space has closed since your last visit, the wire will be long in the back so again, grab some nail clippers and give it a trim.

O-tie

If the color around your bracket is coming off a few wings of the bracket, get a tooth pick and replace the circle around each of the four wings of the bracket.
